The Overdominance of Computers

Abstract: Monke spoke to my heart. There is such an imbalance of technology’s use in education and students and teachers have become over reliant on the technologies, without even knowing how to properly use the powerful tools. Just the other day I heard an administrator comment on how one teacher used books too much. I have never heard of such a thing. In a day and age where I have to remind my students what a “table of contents” and “index” is it came as a horrifying shock that one could possibly use books too much. There is something to be said about being able to physical touch and experience your information; and as Monke stated, students are becoming more and more disconnected with reality and humanity because of the lack of physical contact and experience with real things. A book is a real. A Wikipedia entry is virtual. When the power goes off, you can read the book – you cannot access the Wiki. Assumption of computer knowledge is another problem that is reflective of the overdominance of computers in our society (and education). People are in such awe of these powerful tools and what their capabilities are that they fail to hold technology to any standards. Click the link below to read more.
