Tech. Standards and Literacy

How can you apply the Alaska State and ISTE standards in your classroom activities?

I can apply these standards by integrating technological tools into my classroom assignments and conducted lessons, as well as integrate ethical training and personal conect. For example:
  • Rather than having the students handwrite their essays, I can have students type their essays on their laptops
  • I can have students use Internet databases to conduct research for their essays
  • I can have students collaborate with other students on research projects using blogs and podcasts
  • I can have lessons that ask students to reflect on their role in the global community and how their actions have an affect on others
  • I have lessons that teach students to determine and filter the information they encounter on the web

How does the availability of new media drive the development of new literacies? For example, what do you think the value of Garage Band is and its impact on those that don't have musical talent?

The availability of new media requires students to be equipped with the skills necessary to filter through a variety (and plethora) of information. Students have to be able to not only read and comprehend materials, but they also have to be able to distinguish between primary and secondary sources.
In regards to the value of Garage Band, I think that is a valuable tool for developing podcasts and other oral projects, but it should not replace or be considered as valuable as actual musical literacy. For example, it cannot and should not replace a real, skilled piano player.
